Massage Therapy

Our licensed massage therapists provide therapeutic massage to suit the health needs of our patients.
We provide different types of massage therapy.

SWEDISH MASSAGE THERAPY

Among other health benefits, Swedish Massage promotes relaxation by warming up the muscle tissue, releasing tension and gradually breaking up muscle knots...

Both relaxing and energizing, Swedish massage therapy relieves muscle tension through soft and long kneading strokes, as well as light and rhythmic tapping strokes, on the uppermost layers of muscles, and is combined with movement of the joints.  It may even help after an injury.

In all Swedish massage, the therapist lubricates the skin with massage oil and performs various massage strokes. These movements warm up the muscle tissue, releasing tension and gradually breaking up muscle "knots" or adhered tissues, called adhesions. Swedish massage promotes relaxation, among other health benefits.

Both relaxing and energizing, Swedish massage therapy relieves muscle tension.

The common strokes of Swedish massage include:
  • a smooth, gliding stroke used to relax soft tissue (effleurage);
  • squeezing, rolling, or kneading that follows (Petrissage);
  • deep, circular movements that make the layers of tissue rub against each other, which helps to increase blood flow and breaks down scar tissue (friction);
  • and a short, alternating tap done with cupped hands, fingers, or the edge of the hand (tapotement).

A Swedish massage can be slow and gentle, or vigorous and bracing, depending on what our therapists want to achieve.

Enjoy the comfort and energizing of our Swedish Massage at Cedars Chiropractic and Wellness Center!

If you want deeper work and can tolerate more pressure, even momentary discomfort, to get relief from muscle pain, it's better to book a deep tissue massage, which is another form of Swedish massage.

Most people get a 50 or 60 min. Swedish or deep tissue massage.
We recommend 75 or 90min to give more time to the therapist to work the muscle tissue and achieve better results.

PRENATAL OR PREGNANCY MASSAGE

Totally safe for your baby, Pregnancy Massage reduces the levels of stress hormones in your body enduring dramatic physical and hormonal changes during pregnancy.

Very soothing and relaxing in style, our pregnancy massage provides expectant mothers with relaxation, appeases nerves, and alleviates strained back and leg muscles.

We recommend Prenatal Massage during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy when the extra belly weight pressures further on your back. Totally safe for your baby, it reduces the levels of stress hormones in your body enduring dramatic physical and hormonal changes during pregnancy.

Our massage therapists focus on the special needs of the expectant mother, and will take extra care to make sure your body gets the cushioning, support and position it needs.

For its many benefits, we recommend Pregnancy Massage during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy when the extra belly weight pressures further on your back.

BENEFITS OF PRENATAL MASSAGE
  • provides relaxation by relieving stress on joints,
  • eases neck and back pain,
  • helps keep good posture relaxes and provides flexibility to birthing muscles,
  • aids the circulatory and lymphatic systems, hence keeps blood flowing to both the mother and the baby,
  • stimulates different glands in the body, hence helps to stabilize hormone levels, and relieves nervous tension throughout the body.

The nurturing touch during pregnancy massage promotes relaxation and provides emotional support.

DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE

Deep Tissue Massage is quite therapeutic as it relieves chronic patterns of tension and helps with muscle injuries, like back sprain among other.

Deep tissue massage concentrates on the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia (connective tissue). We recommend it for its focus on certain painful, stiff "trouble spots" in your body.

Our massage therapist uses slow, deliberate strokes that emphasizes the pressure on layers of muscles, tendons, or other tissues deep under your skin. It is less rhythmic than other types of massage, but quite therapeutic as it relieves chronic patterns of tension and helps with muscle injuries, like back sprain among other.

While using many same movements and techniques as the
Swedish massage, Deep Tissue Massage applies more intense pressure that releases chronic muscle tension or knots, also known as "adhesions."

We recommend Deep Tissue Massage for its focus on certain painful, stiff "trouble spots" in your body as it concentrates on the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia (connective tissue).

Important
: Drink a lot of water after a deep tissue massage to help flush lactic acid out of the tissues and to avoid feeling sore the next day.

If you still feel some soreness the following day even if you drank water, it is an indication that a lot of waste products were flushed out of the tissues. It should pass within a day or so.

HOT STONES MASSAGE

Hot stone massage is a variation on classic massage therapy. Heated smooth, flat stones are placed on key points on the body – on the back, in the palms of the hand, or between the toes - and used to massage certain areas of the body. Our therapists also placed them on points known to be the body energy centers in order to re-balance body and mind.

The hot stones are usually made of basalt, a type of rock that is rich in iron, so they retain heat. River rocks are normally used because they have been smoothed over time by the river's current.

Immersed in water and heated to a certain temperature range, the stones promote comforting and relaxing warmth that improves circulation and calms the nervous system. Accordingly, our therapists can work these relaxed muscles without using deep pressure.

Hot Stones Massage is used for a variety of health conditions:
  • Back pain and aches
  • Poor circulation
  • Osteoarthritis and arthritis pain
  • Stress, anxiety and tension
  • Insomnia
  • Depression

SPORTS MASSAGE THERAPY
For body optimal performance or to help healing after a sports trauma, our Sports Massage is sought by athletes and non-athletes alike.

Sports Massage was developed initially to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training, and to help with muscle systems used for a particular sport.

Sports massage is a type of Swedish massage that stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids and where our massage therapist concentrates on a specific problem area.

Some sports massage movements use trigger point therapy to break down adhesions (knots in the muscles) and increase range of motion.

Hence, you do not have to be an athlete to benefit from this type of massage that emphasizes prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons, chronic pain or restricted range of motion.

At Cedars Chiropractic & Wellness Center, we provide 4 types of Sports Massage: Pre-event, Post-event, Restorative during training, and Rehabilitative to restore body health.

THE 4 TYPES OF SPORTS MASSAGE
  • Pre-event: a short, stimulating massage of 15’ to 45’ before the event, focused on the body parts that will be involved in the exertion.
  • Post-event: It is given within 1h or 2h of the event to normalize the body's tissues.
  • Restorative: Beneficial during training as it allows the athlete to train harder and with less injury.
  • Rehabilitative: Beneficial in alleviating pain due to injury and restoring body health.
